Piloting jump aircraft
Skydiving aircraft operations present unique opportunities
and challenges for jump pilots. Most jump planes are modified for
skydiving, and often, those modifcations include flight limitations
for safety. The profile of a jump flight differs from just about
any other kind of flying, requiring special attention to monitoring
other air traffic, air traffic control procedures, fueling, and
emergency procedures. Certain FAA radio communication requirements
also apply.
The FAA does not require additional ratings beyond
a commercial pilot certificate or specific endorsements, but both
USPA and the FAA have recognized the importance of specialized jump
pilot training.
